We are currently in the Galapagos Islands, on an Ecoventura cruise. This is one of those “bucket list” Top 10 travel experiences, and we feel extremely lucky to be here.
The Galapagos are also one of those really expensive destinations, very hard to visit on a budget. But we found this great Gadling article that gives a few tips on doing a Galapagos trip on a budget.
Some of the main pieces of advice include:
Don’t book your cruise on advance
Don’t do a cruise at all
Travel during shoulder season
Take day trips from Puerto Ayora
Barter for tours
Take advantage of free activities
Participate in a Volunteer Project
The Gadling article gives plenty of details about each tip, along with links to specific campgrounds, free activities, volunteer projects, etc.
There are also a few other resources. Fellow travel blogger Nellie Huang writes on her Wild Junket blog, about how to travel the Galapagos Islands on the cheap.
Just like we wrote about African safaris last year, there is really no way to do these types of trips for free, but there ARE ways to not spend an arm and a leg to realize your travel dreams.
