Friday Travel Dreaming – 6/7/13

This week’s roundup of travel dreaming for your weekend includes:

The Budget Traveler’s Guide To Cut-Price Restaurant Meals

Once you are in a destination, after accommodations one of the things that takes the biggest bite out of your budget is food. Here at How to Travel for Free, we’ve shared a lot of our tips for cutting your food budget, including cooking your own meals when in a home exchange or vacation home and eating at inexpensive, and usually yummy, street food joints.

This article at Gadling gives a number of other methods for eating well on the road, for a lot less money. Seeking prix fixe menus, enjoying pre-theatre dinners and eating well at lunch instead of dinner are a few of the tips. And my personal favorite – find the BYOB places!

How To Stay In Nice Hotels Without Paying Top Dollar

We like Gadling this week – this other article at the site gives some good tips for really stretching your travel dollar on accommodations.

“No matter your travel style, it goes without saying that you want to stretch your dollar as far as possible. That often means compromising on accommodation – staying in a bare bones room with questionable stains in the carpet – so you can spend your money on what really matters, which is of course, exploring your destination. Still, few of us would turn down the chance to stay at a nice hotel, especially if we could do it without forking over a whole lot of extra cash. And the thing is, you can stay in nice hotels without paying top dollar – you just have to know how to go about it.”

Travel Contests and Giveaways

And of course, we’ve found a number of contests where you can enter to win some fabulous travel prizes!

About Shelley Seale

I'm Shelley, a journeyer and learner of the world, freelance journalist and author, yoga chick and dog lover. I pound the keyboard from home barefoot every day, and while my boss is demanding she also occasionally lets me have the early afternoon cocktail. I think not going into an office or collecting corporate paychecks are very good ideas, though not always profitable. I have written for National Geographic, USA Today, The Guardian, Texas Monthly and CNN, among others. Neither the New York Times nor Johnny Depp have answered my letters yet. I love yoga, indie movies, wine, and books, though not necessarily in that order. I believe in karma. Mean people suck. If I could have any dream job I would like to be a superhero. I have performed a catch on the flying trapeze, boarded down a live volcano and was once robbed by a monkey in Nepal. But, I don't know how to whistle. My mantra is "travel with a purpose."
